Bowtrol Probiotics

There is a class of dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeast which are called probiotics – a bacteria in Bowtrol Colon Cleanse.  The opposite of antibiotics which are created to kill harmful bacteria, probiotics encourage the growth of bacteria that are thought to be beneficial to the body, especially in the intestines.  According to the most current definition by FAO/WHO, probiotics are: ‘Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’. [1]

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are the most common type of microbes used in formulating probiotics.  LAB is bacteria that can convert sugars (including lactose) and other carbohydrates into lactic acid therefore they have been used in the food industry for many years. LAB is what is responsible for the tart and distinctive taste of fermented dairy foods such as yogurt and kefir.  These probiotics also acts as a preservative.  Probiotics act by lowering the pH level in food which then works by not allowing bad bacteria organisms to grow and spoil the food.

Probiotic bacterial cultures are intended to assist the body’s naturally occurring gut flora to increase or to rebuild after illness, stress or the use of antibiotics therapy.   Most often these are recommended by nutritionists and naturopaths, some doctors are beginning to prescribe them as well.  They are most especially prescribed to be used after a course of antibiotics, or as part of the treatment for gut related candidiasis.   There are some claims that have been made that probiotics can be used in order to strengthen the immune system. [2]

The best understood reasoning for the use of probiotics is that the physical body normally already contains miniature ecology of microbes, generally known as the gut flora.   These bacteria are very beneficial however the balance can be thrown off leading to an increase in less beneficial and even harmful bacteria.  These can be unbalanced by a wide range of circumstances that are fairly common.  Some of these conditions include the use of antibiotics or other pharmaceutical drugs, excessive alcohol intake, stress, disease, or exposure to any number of toxic substances. When this happens the beneficial bacteria that work well with our bodies (see symbiosis) may decrease in number.  If the good stuff decreases, then the bad stuff can take over and this negatively impacts our health.

Maintenance of a healthy gut flora is not easy as it is dependent on many factors, especially the quality of our daily food choices which for most people are not very healthy.  Including a significant proportion of prebiotic (foods that precede the creation of probiotics) foods in the diet has been proven to support and encourage healthy gut flora and may be another easy and effective way to gain desirable health benefits promised by probiotics.

There have been some experiments into the benefits of probiotic therapies which suggest several beneficial medicinal uses for probiotics. Unfortunately more research is needed as what has been done is limited and only preliminary results are available. It should also be noted that the effects described in research reports are effects of probiotics as whole.  Research can only document the individual strain such as LAB not probiotoics in general.
